Maintaining proper strength and flexibility of leg and trunk muscles will often help alleviate and prevent orthopaedic injuries of the back. Below are some exercises and stretches for the back that you may find helpful.

Extension Stretch

Abdominal Exercise
Flatten back by tightening stomach muscles and buttocks.

Angry Cat Stretch
Tuck chin and tighten stomach, arching back.

Piriformis Stretch
Cross legs with involved leg on top. Gently pull other knee toward chest until a comfortable stretch is felt in the buttock/hip area.

Back Flexion Stretch
With hand behind one knee, pull knee in to chest until a comfortable stretch is felt in lower back and buttocks. Keep back relaxed.
